Meet Marie, the chef behind \nArôme Cassis\n. Originally a pianist and subsequently a music therapist, Marie grew up in Cairo, Egypt surrounded by a mixed Egyptian-Greek family. This blend of cultures bloomed her interest in the intersection between art, food and music, and in 2020 she founded Arôme Cassis, a ‘celebration of sensory experiences’. Initially based around the documentation of a blended universe of food and music, Marie’s culinary artistry has evolved over the years, allowing for endless experimentation, self-expression, and innovation, turning the act of preparing food into a powerful creative outlet, where colour plays a pivotal role. How would you describe your relationship with colour and how has it influenced your craft?  \n“I’ve always been drawn to the sensory experience of colour, first in music and now in cooking. I remember my piano teacher would ask me, ‘What colour does this part of the piece transmit?’. Being encouraged to think about the relationship between music and colour in this way, about subjective interpretation, has informed so much of my creative process today. I love exploring the way colours in food interact to produce different emotions in us, and a variety of different sensory experiences. But what excites me the most is the unexpected. There is just so much to play with when it comes to colour, endless food pairings each with their unique colour palettes.”

Are there certain dishes you enjoy cooking the most? \n“I think, for me, food has to be eaten. Some of my core memories are about being fed or feeding others. So for me, it depends on the situation. Sometimes it will be about making a big pot of comforting soup. Sometimes it will be about being a bit more experimental, playing with jellies, collecting moulds and things like that. A simple combination, but I did feel that this subtle flavour and colour combination conveyed Green 09’s warm, yet uplifting qualities that I just love so much. The comforting nature of the biscuits also complements the green, so I found it to be a great match.”

Panna cotta inspired by Pink 08\n“For \nPink 08\n, I decided to make a panna cotta with a layered jelly on top. I just found that the combination of strawberry and cream could not be more perfect for this colour. Pink 08 is vibrant and playful, but also warm and deep. Jelly and panna cotta, to me, have those same qualities”

Crème caramel inspired by Brown 02\n“For \nBrown 02\n, I decided to make a creme caramel. It’s very simple, but it’s one of my favourite desserts in the world. It’s jiggly. It’s playful. Everybody loves it. I can't think of a more comforting dessert. Brown 02 has that warm, comforting, grounding feel to it as well, so I thought the creme caramel was perfect.” 

Banana bread inspired by Taupe 03\n“For \nTaupe 03\n, I made a banana cake with a Tonka custard, a flavour that I love. I dusted the banana cake in a smoked demerara sugar. When I think about Taupe 03, I think about these warm, smoky flavours. This was the first thing that jumped into my mind. I was like, “For this colour, it must be cake.” And with cake, custard must be served. I just found that to be a very good match.”

Pea and mint ricotta pasta inspired by Green 13\n“For \nGreen 13\n, I made a pea and mint ricotta pasta. This colour is fresh and bright. I'm a big fan of the combination of mint and peas, and when paired with the ricotta, they work together to create a vibrant and fresh summer dish. Of course, red pasta sauces are amazing, but sometimes I crave the more refreshing green sauces made with mint.”

Candied pears and Laious cheese inspired by Beige 03\n“For \nBeige 03\n, I decided to make candied thin pears which I paired with Laious cheese that's cut in the manner of cutting Tête de Moine. I just find this manner of cutting cheese to be so wonderful and delicate. And I do think that this colour really conveys that delicateness.”

Corners and edges are softened, the line between the wall and the ceiling blends, which makes a space feel more expansive.\nEliminating contrast can also make a colour feel softer. Say, for example, you have a room painted in dark blue with white woodwork - the dark blue will appear stronger and more saturated by contrast. A room colour drenched in dark blue - walls, woodwork, ceiling, the lot - however, will make the blue appear softer and the walls recede. We never see colour in isolation - it is the combination of colours that determines how our eyes adjust to them.\nOur top tips for colour drenching\nKeep things tonal\nIf you want to create a soft and gentle colour scheme, go \nmonochromatic\n. To do this, pull out various tints and shades of the colour of your walls and apply them to your furnishings. Below, the \nPink 03\n walls are referenced in the pink linen, dusty red headboard, and lighter pink tones of the bed throw. The result is a cosy and cocooning space enveloped in colour, and one that feels restful on the eye.  

Contrast furnishings to make them pop\nColour drenching isn’t solely reserved for bold colours. You can also colour drench rooms in softer tones and barely-there neutrals for an equally impactful look. Going light on the walls lends itself well to those who want their furnishings and artwork to stand out and be the focal point of the room. Blend in built-in storage \nIn smaller bedrooms, bulky storage like free-standing wardrobes can stand out and make a room feel cluttered. Incorporating primary colours into your decor is a rebellion against restrained, ‘adult’ colour schemes. Think bright, chunky designs drenched in hues that take you back to your first-year classroom, and all the uninhibited joy that comes with it. The colour psychology behind primary colours\nAs our Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist, Tash Bradley, explains; \n“\nFrom a colour psychology perspective, the three primary colours—red, yellow, and blue—relate to the body, mind, and our emotions, respectfully.\n” \nPrimary red attracts the most physical attention, which is why it has been used to serve utilitarian purposes like the stop sign at traffic lights. Primary blue is mentally stimulating, known for its capacity to rouse us intellectually. And primary yellow is a potent emotional stimulator, giving us a boost of energy and optimism. In short - they demand to be noticed and have visceral effects on our emotions.\nWhat colours go with primary colours?\nNeutrals\nSoft neutrals and earthy tones provide an ideal backdrop for a pop of joyful primary hues. When pairing primary colours with neutrals, consider texture. Natural materials like linens, woods and stones will warm up the scheme and soften the hues.\nMonochromatic\nPrimary colours also look great when paired with different tints and shades of the same hue, in a \nmonochromatic colour scheme\n. Take primary red, for example. By adding white, you get pink - a 'tint' of red. Add black, and you get maroon, a 'shade' of red. In an interior scheme, the right combination of these red iterations will offset the intensity of the primary hue, creating a visually cohesive look. \nComplimentary\nYou can also pair primary hues with their \ncomplementary colours\n for a colourful and balanced scheme. The complementary colour of red is green. The complementary colour of yellow is purple. And the complementary colour of blue is orange. 

How to style primary colours in your interiors\nBecause of their intensity, primary colours can run the risk of overwhelming a space, rather than enhancing it. The key to pulling off primary colours is getting the balance right, ensuring they are not the dominant colour in the room. Tash advises that you stick to the 60-30-10 rule;\n“For a harmonious interior colour scheme, 60% of the room should be comprised of a dominant colour, 30% should be the sub-dominant colour, and the last 10% should be an accent. Primary colours are high saturation, so they work best when introduced as the sub-dominant or accent colour, taking up the smallest percentage of the room.”\n"Primary colours are high saturation, so they work best when introduced as the sub-dominant or accent colour, taking up the smallest percentage of the room."\nThis could be through furniture, textiles, accessories, artwork, accent walls, door frames, period detailing, and more. When introduced sparingly as accents or statement pieces, they create a focal talking point in a room, sparking conversation. Here are some ways to incorporate them;\nPaint your ceiling or the inside of cupboards for a little surprise\nThe ceiling (aka the ‘fifth wall’) is a playground where you can explore bolder hues and more adventurous patterns, without it feeling overbearing. It’s the perfect place, therefore, to experiment with primary colours. Keep your walls relatively serene painted in neutral tones like whites and beiges, then add a splash of red, yellow or blue to the ceiling to draw your eye upwards and make a statement. Painting the inside of cupboards is also a great way to add a primary pop. Opening up a cupboard to see a burst of colour will feel like a lovely surprise. What’s more, you can simply close it for a calmer scheme when you feel like winding down.

Paint an accent wall\nWhen it comes to your four walls, Tash recommends painting an accent wall rather than colour-drenching an entire room. This is because a space painted wall-to-wall in a primary colour can give you the adverse, negative psychlological traits of the colour. For example, if you painted an entire room in primary yellow and didn't offset it with softer tones, it would actually make you feel anxious and overwhelmed. Similarly, too much oversaturated blue would become cold and uncaring, and a room wrapped in primary red would feel overstimulating and aggressive. An \naccent\n wall painted in a primary colour, however, will add a burst of energy without it feeling overwhelming.\nThis \nBlue 111\n accent wall below works particularly well because it has been styled with warmer accents. Natural woods and mustard tones add texture to the space, whilst framed artwork and wall lights break up the colour, making it easier on the eye.

Go bold with your furniture\nA great way to introduce primary colours into your home is through your furniture. Side tables, consoles, coffee tables, stools, and chairs are prime candidates for a primary pop. In terms of materials, lacquer lends itself particularly well to being drenched in a primary hue. Highly saturated blocks of lacquer furniture add a punchy and contemporary element to a space. When contrasted against a more natural, earthy scheme, the high gloss finish feels unexpected, which adds visual interest.

Today, we’re taking a trip to the English countryside, to the rejuvenating Soho Farmhouse. Under twoh ours from London, this 100-acre property is an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. A calming country retreat, it’s \nmodern farmhouse decor\n (with an extra splash of colour) at its finest. \nThe history and architecture\nLocated on a former working farm, the estate dates back to 1774. The original farmhouse, a Grade II listed building, has been painstakingly renovated with many of its period features restored., In keeping with its age and grandeur, it’s decorated in a very \ntraditional decor style\n. Whilst the rest of the architecture is more \nmodern farmhouse\n, the building’s Georgian architecture was used as the starting point and is referenced throughout. Almost all of the buildings and cabins are built from instantly recognisable yellow Cotswolds limestone or reclaimed timber. \nIn fact, the entire estate references both its location and agricultural roots, largely through its animals. Indian runner ducks and Bantam hens roam free. You can even pay a visit to the House’s family of goats and some very porky pigs, or find a stable full of horses.  There’s even a huge vegetable garden and several beehives dotted amongst wildflowers meadows.

Connecting to the outdoors\nBecause that’s what Soho Farmhouse is all about: reconnecting to the outdoors. From an architectural perspective, almost all of the rooms have been built with terraces and outside seating, whilst the cabins open onto private balconies with al fresco baths, overlooking babbling brooks and rolling fields. Even the pool has an indoor-outdoor element to it. There are also plenty of heated and covered outdoor areas, so you can enjoy dinner and drinks in the open air (without getting soaked because this \nis\n England, after all). With nature on your doorstep, outdoorsy activities are very much encouraged. You can have a go at anything from clay-pigeon shooting and horse riding to cycling and boating.

A natural colour scheme\nInside, the interiors reflect the surrounding landscape. Drawing the outdoors in with natural greens, warm browns, \nearthy beiges\n and sky blues, the House’s blend of organic textures with locally made pieces adds to its rustic charm. At its core, Soho Farmhouse’s colour palette embraces biophilic design, using nature-based neutrals to connect you to the outdoors when you’re around them.\nIn particular, you’ll notice beiges like \nBeige 02 Soho Farmhouse\n and various shades of green present throughout the house and indeed, the surrounding landscape. In fact, from the woodwork and upholstery to the scenery, you will find every shade of green at Soho Farmhouse. In Pen Yen you’ve got lively, fresh greens with lots of hanging plants creating a \nbiophilic feel\n. The Piglets feature rich forest greens and the Garden rooms a soft, pale green. The abundance of natural shades in the interior colour scheme is key to what gives Soho Farmhouse its instantly calming feel.

A sense of play is created through the use of desaturated accent colours to create a gently layered colour scheme. Think dusty greyish pinks paired with slate, deep graphite blues and rich, earthy reds. It’s rarely bright, primary colours—always soft, tertiary hues that can be found in the natural world. In a bedroom, for example, whilst you might find natural tones and materials on the walls, flooring, and furnishings, there will always be a splash of pink, mustard or blue in the upholstery, or in the lighting for a little pop of colour to avoid the space becoming too monotone. The overall effect is a colour scheme and a rural escape that calms and recharges.

Design inspiration\nWhilst there are plenty of references to the surrounding countryside, Soho House Designer, Graham Moore, explains that they “didn’t ever want the decor to feel quintessentially English”. Instead, he says, he would describe Soho Farmhouse’s decor as “surprising”. It’s simply not what you expect and was an antidote to stuffy country hotels. For example, the Cabins were inspired by upstate New York cabin culture, in some of the rooms there is a subtle inspiration from Morocco, the Hay Barn has a loose 1970s feel, and the Cabins use American materials like reclaimed wooden floors from Wyoming and Navajo-inspired prints. From India to America, these rustic elements incorporate other cultures and styles whilst giving the interiors that cosy, lived-in family feel. Moore explains; 

At every step along the way, we treated it as if we were recreating a family home full of personal touches and character.

According to Moore, nothing should ever look new—it should always look vintage or reclaimed. And Soho Farmhouse takes that to new heights with a huge focus on natural, reclaimed materials when it comes to flooring, walls and furniture. Hardy fabrics like hessian and seagrass are used for rugs, whilst organic linens and vintage leather sofas are favoured for seating. “It’s about layering texture on texture, but always in a rustic way,” Moore advises. “You need to incorporate different layers for an eclectic, well-rounded space”.

A community feel\nAnd, as with all Soho Houses, community is at the heart of the design, but nowhere is this felt more prominently than at Soho Farmhouse. The gravel-covered dining area, surrounding the Main Barn in particular, has the feeling of a lively market square. Upon entering, you hear that pleasing crunch underfoot, synonymous with the countryside and long, winding driveways. In the colder months, guests congregate around open fireplaces and an enormous fire pit, giving it an almost permanently festive atmosphere. Paved pathways take you from the Main Barn to the boating lake, through the kitchen garden, onto the crazy golf course. All as retro milk floats and guests on Pashley bikes whizz by. It feels akin to a village within a village.

As part of our \nLick x Soho House collaboration\n, we're taking an in-depth look at the Houses that inspired the colours. This week it's Brooklyn's iconic DUMBO House. Overlooking New York City's East River, nestled between Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge, it occupies the sixth and seventh floors of a former brick factory and is privy to uninterrupted views of NYC's skyline. We're peering through those famous floor-to-ceiling windows and taking a closer look at the interiors that inspired its paint colour, \nPurple 03 DUMBO House\n. So if you want to dig a little deeper into the past and present of this one-of-a-kind location, read on.\nThe architecture \nPritzker Prize-winning Mexican architect, Luis Barragán, was a huge inspiration for the Soho House design team, influencing both the interior and exterior spaces of DUMBO House. Known for his bold and colourful houses, it was this playful use of colour that inspired the pink concrete roof used on the rooftop bar. Born in Guadalajara, Barragán was formally trained as an engineer before becoming a self-taught architect. Many believe that it was this lack of formal training that gave him the freedom to break the rules and experiment with light, shadow, colours, and texture. Both inside and outside, you can see how the Soho House design team channelled Barragán’s sense of fun and rule-breaking style.\nThere’s an emphasis on bringing the outdoors in. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of those pristine New York city skyline views. As Soho House founder Nick Jones describes:

There is always that magical moment in the evening when the sun starts to set and you can watch as the Brooklyn Bridge and city light up, sitting on the terrace with a negroni in hand—I don’t think that could ever get old.

And with an almost 4000 sq ft rooftop, you’re never too far away from one of those magical sunsets, proving that even in the heart of the urban jungle, you can still reconnect with the outdoors.

The interiors \nLuis Barragán’s influence can be felt throughout the interiors. “[He] was a huge inspiration," says Soho House's Senior Interior Designer, Staver Kaufman. "He worked a lot with colour-blocked concrete in his architecture which helped inform our colour story". The lower level is an open-plan space, incorporating a lounge, library bar, and dining spaces. The interiors channel DUMBO’s 1960s and 70s heyday, when New York’s creative scene “were drawn to the lofty warehouse spaces which provided light and inexpensive rent” explains Kaufman.

Throughout, there are plenty of touches that channel elements of that \nretro decor style\n—think thick pile rugs, wicker furnishings, curved seating in bouclé upholstery, not to mention lots of plush velvet in a rich colour palette of purple, ochre, and teal. Vinyl records and vintage books give the House a lived-in, homely feel whilst artworks by local artists champion DUMBO’s artistic heritage and bring the interiors back to the modern day.

The colour palette \nInside, it draws on its surroundings, with the ceiling painted in the same shade of blue as the Manhattan Bridge. “Our design team actually visited the New York City maintenance office to find the exact shade used” explains Candace Campos, Soho House’s Lead Designer. The very same bridge that can be spotted from those panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows and that gave Brooklyn’s ‘DUMBO’ (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass) its acronym. Elsewhere, earthy ochres reflect the warmer tones of nearby Brooklyn Bridge.\nOf the rest of the colour palette, Campos explains how they “wanted to give the space a Mexican feel but also honour the strong colour story and homage to the artistic community that lives throughout the rest of the house”. Opulent purples, the inspiration behind \nPurple 03 DUMBO House\n, abound, as do warming pink velvets and rich teals.

Whilst the \nHenri armchair in Obie print velvet\n continues the House's jewelled tones whilst adding pattern and texture. It’s a place with a lot of emotion attached to it and it means that the \nbedroom paint colour\n you choose is really important. According to \na 2021 study\n, around 1 in 3 Brits have trouble getting to sleep during the week, whilst 1 in 5 find it a nightly struggle. As our home and work life merges, 10% of the population admit to ‘working from bed’ whilst a massive 70% of people report sleeping with their phones next to their beds. All of this affects our sleep cycle and can lead to disrupted sleep patterns.\nWhilst there are several steps you can take towards \nbetter ‘sleep hygiene’ in your bedroom\n, the colour you choose to paint your walls is a great place to start. So, with that in mind, we spoke to \nTash Bradley, our Director of Interior Design\n, to recommend some of the best paint colours for your bedroom, according to colour psychology.\nHow do bedroom colours affect your mood?\nDid you know that the colours of bedroom walls have a huge impact on your mood, mental wellbeing, and how well you sleep? According to the principles of colour psychology, certain colours have the ability to make us feel calm and rested, whilst others can leave us feeling stimulated and anxious. So, when we’re asking ‘How do you want your bedroom to feel’ we’re really asking ‘How do \nyou\n want to feel’?

Warming, calming, relaxing, safe, and cocooning—these are the adjectives people choose to describe how they want their bedrooms to feel.

What are the best bedroom colours for better sleep?\nIf you’ve got one of those brains that simply won’t stop the chatter as soon as your head hits the pillow, then a gentle \nblue bedroom paint\n might just be the answer. The most mentally calming colour, Tash loves a soft blue in the bedroom. According to her “the softer the blue, the more calming. Shades like \nBlue 01\n, \nBlue 02\n, and \nBlue 13\n are perfect for a soothing bedroom and can help you sleep better”.\nDarker shades tend to be more stimulating, so if you’re set on going dark she recommends \nBlue 17\n. This grounded, muted blue will help you feel relaxed and supported, without being overstimulating. Alternatively, Tash recommends \nteal paint for your bedroom walls\n, as a calming compromise for dark blue. Those green undertones of \nTeal 01\n and \nTeal 02\n add a soothing softness to a space, whilst still creating a deep and cocooning effect.

What is the most relaxing colour in a bedroom?\nOf all of the colours, green is the least demanding on the eye. Without getting too sciencey on you, it’s the easiest hue for those rods and cones located in your retina to process. “The colour of balance, green connects us to nature. It brings a little of the outdoors in and instantly makes you feel more relaxed,” says Tash. So, if you’re looking to create a restful feel in your bedroom, reach for those \ngreen bedroom paints\n.\nThe holy grail of greens, for its versatility in different light conditions, \nGreen 02\n is a great mid-tone to use in your bedroom, whilst \nGreen 03\n is an excellent choice for creating an air of tranquillity and quiet reflection. If you want to go for something lighter, consider \nGreen 09\n, \nGreen 11\n, or \nGreen 14\n.

What colours are the most calming and soothing for a bedroom?\n“Whilst blues are mentally calming, pinks are \nphysically\n calming,” explains Tash. Pink is the colour of cuddles. So, if you go to bed every night with your shoulders up by your earlobes and your back in knots, then a cosy, nurturing \npink paint for your bedroom walls\n will work wonders for your sleep. Tash recommends opting for muted hues, like \nPink 07\n or \nPink 08\n. These dusky pinks are straight from nature. They are earthy and grounding, and that heavy dose of black pigment makes them feel really grown up.\nOn the other end of things, if you’re looking for a light and bright, barely-there paint, go for \nPink 01\n—a great alternative if you’re after something more neutral. Alternatively, if just the mention of pink makes you run a mile, Tash suggests “a fresh take on pink” \nPurple 05\n or \nPurple 06\n.

What neutral colours are best in a bedroom?\nFrom whites to beiges and through to taupe, we never met a neutral we didn’t like. Sometimes you just want a blank backdrop and nothing does this better than a neutral \nwhite bedroom paint\n. Oaty \nWhite 05\n will brighten up even the darkest bedroom, or for a really smart and serene palette, \nWhite 04\n has a linen-like texture to it and will bounce light around a south-east facing room.\nIf you want to add more depth and texture to your colour palette whilst still keeping it very relaxed, beautiful \nBeige 02\n and \nBeige 03\n will do just this. As Tash puts it, “these guys are there to make you feel safe. To create a sanctuary and a cosy, comforting environment”. Their yellow undertones inject warmth into a space—especially Beige 03 for a dark north-facing bedroom. Finally, Tash recommends earthy \nTaupe 03\n. Its red undertones give it a pink(ish) appearance yet the effect is really cosy and grown-up.
