So you've decided to decorate and you've got your hands on some Lick \npaint\n or wallpaper samples to help you pick the perfect palette for your space...huzzah! But there’s a bit more to just slapping one up on the wall when making a decision on which color/design to go with. Natasha our lead color specialist has put together a quick guide on how to try your samples at home so you can find the color you love with ease. Let's begin.

1. Move them around\nIf it's love at first sight then read no further. Order the color and get decorating.\nHowever, you don't need to rush to make your decision just yet. Firstly, try moving the sample patch onto each wall in your space, including the window wall.\nThe color will look completely different, each time, depending on how much light is bouncing off it. The more natural daylight reflecting on the surface, the lighter the color will appear. Colors near windows will appear a lot lighter than the wall surrounding them, as the window wall is more likely to be in shadow.\nWith Lick peel-and-stick samples you can easily place them at various points around a room before you make a decision. Make sure to try them against key pieces of furniture, at different positions around the room, and look at them at different times of the day too.

2. Pay attention to the lighting\nThe colors will change throughout the day, so make sure to view these at the time that you are most likely to be in the room... so not necessarily 5 minutes before you dash off to work, especially if it is going to be a space used mostly in the evenings.  \nContinue to move your sample around at different times of the day.  Colors will look different in the morning light and they will change when viewed in the afternoon light. They will look very different again in the evening with electric lighting on them so make sure you are happy with the results at all times of the day.\nAs a general rule - the natural lighting of your room is dependent on which direction it faces. If you have a south-facing room, in the UK, then the colors will appear lighter during the day, whereas if you have a north-facing room then the color will appear darker during the daylight hours. West-facing rooms are cooler in the morning and brighter in the afternoon so your paint color will look darker in the morning and lighter later on in the day, and east-facing rooms are the opposite - i.e. lighter in the morning, and darker in the afternoon.\nBut it’s not all about natural light - your choice in lighting fixtures is also an important factor to consider when testing your samples. If you find that all the colors you are choosing don’t quite look right during the evening, it could be that the color of your light bulbs are affecting the paints and making them appear cold. This often happens when cool white LED bulbs have been installed. Even some of the warm white LED bulbs can be on the cool side if entry-level ones have been purchased. This is highly likely to make all the colors in the room feel slightly less inviting, not just the paint color.\n\n3. Two's a crowd\nYour eye is more effective at processing a single color at a time. You will read a mix of all the colors differently depending on which color it is placed next to. Therefore, we always suggest placing the sample patches onto the wall and viewing them both individually as well as collectively as part of a palette.

4. Go with your gut and have confidence\nAt the end of the day, you and whoever you share your space with are the ones that need to love the color. Don't worry too much about what other people think! If your gut is shouting out for our \noff-white White 02 paint\n in the bedroom or a soft \nGreige 02 paint\n in the living - then go for it. As Tash, our Lead color Specialist, explains, “biophilia is all about connecting with nature. It makes you feel very calm, whilst pattern breaks up a room. By bringing in a dense botanical or forest wallpaper design, you’re softening the walls, and straight away it will open it up”.\n\nBiophilic designs like gentle \nFern 01\n are perfect if you want to bring this trend into your home. A gorgeous use of biophilic-inspired wallpaper, it creates a connection with nature through a set of glass doors, drawing the outdoors in.

There’s still that connection with nature, but it’s more of a nod than a direct representation. As Tash puts it, “it’s a more contemporary way of having floral designs in your home. Everyone loves a floral, but abstract botanicals allow you to be a bit more adventurous and playful with your color choices and style”. 2022 wallpaper trend: animal motifs\nClose neighbors of biophilia are animal motifs, as both connect us to the natural world. So whilst cheeky monkeys popping out of lush foliage, like our \nMonkey 01\n, \nMonkey 02\n, and \nMonkey 03\n designs, will bring a sense of fun to a room, birds on the other hand can create a sense of elegance and serenity. They can transport you to warmer climes and invoke a sense of wanderlust.

She’s gone wall-to-wall \nAnimal 02\n in her bathroom. “I was thinking of doing the elephants again at home in Ireland—but then, is that \ntoo\n many elephants?”. The answer is almost certainly no. 2022 wallpaper trend: contemporary coastal\nSomething we've seen lots more of when it comes to wallpaper designs are contemporary coastal motifs. Get those old fashioned nautical tropes out of your mind—these styles are as cool as a sea breeze, like our \nWaves 01\n, \nWaves 02\n and \nWaves 03\n designs.
